4th Graders Meet New Friends in Greece!

This week Mrs. Molskness' 4th graders met a great group of students from Greece for the first time using Skype. They plan to meet every month to get to know each other and learn more about each other's cultures and interests. The students in Greece are in an English Learning Class where they are learning to speak the English language more fluently. Both classes were very excited to meet each other and are looking forward to the next meeting!

The 4th graders are well on their way to creating their monster for the Global Monster Project!  They just finished creating an introduction about their class and school in Computers and have plans to Skype with some of the schools involved in the project in the weeks to come!

These are the Introduction Voicethreads the students created:

Technology Update

Computer Class Update

All of the links and activities in class are on the school website.  Go to - Classes - Mrs. Allen and click on the grade you want to view.

We use Google Chrome as the preferred browser in the lab.  I recommend you download it on your computers, if you are able.  It’s faster and works nicely with the Google Apps for junior high.  Also, update Adobe Reader.  That’s what Google has used to help with printing.

8th Grade

The 8th graders have started their own blogs on a monitored site called The Writers Club (  There are 1,000 student writers from 44 countries contributing to the site.  Their first post was a reflection on 9/11.  Their posts are thoughtful and some quite powerful.  You can search by first name and “sr” at the end.
We are also going through ways to use a spreadsheet to make charts and graphs for Science Fair.

7th Grade

The 7th graders have begun the Digiteen Project, a project focusing on global digital citizenship.  This is the 3rd year I’ve participated in the project with St. Ray’s students and the 4th project I’m managing.  Students will collaborate in small global groups finding information and media about their topic.  They will use Edmodo and the Digiteen wiki ( to communicate and create their final project.  This project has about 800 students participating in over 20 schools.  More information will follow for 7th grade parents.

6th Grade

The 6th graders started the year learning about their Google Apps for Education accounts.  All junior high students have an account that allows them to use Google Docs, Spreadsheet and Presentations (like Microsoft Office).  They have an email account for school purposes only.  Google Apps for Education allows students and parents to communicate and collaborate more effectively...and it's a free educational program.  They also are using Edmodo, an educational closed social network where the junior high teachers and I use the site for assignments, discussions, and collaboration.  They just created an avatar for their Edmodo profile.

5th Grade

In 5th grade the students join the iCollaboratory, an online educational site where students research, create webpages, and share with other students around the world.  For the month of October, students will be researching about the platforms of our presidential candidates.  They'll create a webpage to share their information with other students and vote on the candidate of their choice. Around the same time of the official election, students will also vote for their candidate.

4th Grade

Monsters beware!  The 4th graders have begun the monster project.  They will create a monster based on parts of body descriptions from classrooms all over the world (  Monster creations from the past 2 years are up in the library eagerly awaiting their new friend!  Students will create the monster in the art room. They have been working on their introduction using Voicethread, a digital storytelling tool.  Skype meetings with classrooms are planned as well.

3rd Grade

It's Global Read Aloud time for 3rd graders!  During this month, students will read the story, Charlotte's Web, and discuss topics with other schools around the Northern Hemisphere.  Students are using Edmodo to write their predictions, thoughts, and learn more about their new friends in Florida and Canada.  They will also skype with them soon!

Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade

Students participated in International Dot Day by creating dots using Kerpoof, an online drawing tool.  They are also practicing their typing skills using Dance Mat Typing (1st and 2nd) and Keyboard Climber.  They are doing an amazing job!  After a certain amount of time, they can play educational games on ABCYa or Starfall, educational sites.

Students are playing educational sites and are learning how to use the new laptops without a mouse.  All of the sites are on my webpage.  Go to  Choose “classes” and my name.  Then choose PreKindergarten. These sites can be played at home, too!

Early Childhood
While not at the laptops yet, students are enjoying websites that review shapes, colors, numbers and spiders!  In a few months, students will be able start playing the sites learned in class on their own.  They are great listeners and enjoy their time in the lab.

*All sites are located at, classes, Mrs. Allen.
